I think a lot of issues surrounding Vilkas's dialogue is that because he's a high ranking member/quest giver of the Companions his bouncing back and forth between nice and arse-hole responses stick out a little bit more because of the way the scripting works. IIRC there's a similar thing going on with the Thieves Guild ...Vilkas won't leave Ysgramor's tomb. After the Glory of the Dead, farkas and aela have returned to Jorrvaskr, but vilkas is still in the tomb. When I go in the tomb, he stands there and automatically comes to me and talks to me. If you have completed the Companions questline, Farkas and Vilkas will want to get rid of their lycanthropy, which will require them to temporarily become your follower, forcing any active followers out. I'd like to think it's because maybe they both grew up with the Nordic accent speaking the Nordic language but Farkas learned English at an earlier age than Vilkas and therefore developed an American accent whenever he speaks English.
