I would Google "cleaning the Model 60". There are good step by step videos on stripping and cleaning your rifle. Give it a good cleaning and then give it another try in a safe, controlled environment. If you work on Jeeps, you should have no problem field stripping the rifle. I looked up the serial numbers and determined that these rifles were manufactured in 1976.. They have not been shot since at least 1985 when my Grandfather passed. Then I use a hair dryer to blow most the water away and get the receiver warm. My marlin 60 is 35 years old, Hot water is all I have ever cleaned the Model 60 with.As for how often, with my 60 it depends on what ammo I'm shooting. The lead rounds (CCI Blazer & Win. Wildcat) seem to need a cleaning after 200 rounds or so. I took my new Marlin 60 (60SB) apart for cleaning today for the first time after shooting around 400 rounds through it. The owners manual says to clean the action after every 250 rounds! When I went to reassemble it I messed up the recoil spring.Tile’s easy to clean, but good luck getting the surrounding grout back to its original pearly white.To remove the bolt to clean the bore you just squeeze the trigger while pulling the bolt assembly out the back of the receiver.
