There is a range of powders on the burning rate chart that are deemed acceptable to use with the M1. IMR 4895 is widely accepted as the powder that best hits the 'sweet spot' in the range of powders to use with 150 grain bullets that are M1 Rifle-friendly. Burn rate is quite slow compared to AR-C and 8208.1,240. According to QL IMR4227 should be suitable for .223 with 24" velocities in the range of 3150 fps (55 gr) to 3200 fps (3200 fps). Those should be usable ballistics as they represent what I have been using for 50+ years in a .222.
