This my 1989 Jeep Grand Wagoneer that I repowered back in 2010 with a Cummins 4BT. The transmission is a TF727 from an '89 Dodge/ Cummins 5.9L 2500. Transfer case is the original Jeep NP229.The stock Ford radiator is probably more than adequate and the addition of an aftercooler would be preferred. The most common 4bt you'll find will be the VE pump engine, The P pump engines are less common and more expensive, but can be found. Most guys avoid the common rail versions due to the more complex swap.4bt cost. my cost looks like about $1600.00 in the motor..$500.00 in ford set up stuff..about another $500.00 for swap building items ..This should be about all mine cost ...Unless it take a $1000.00 for an injection pump ....I hope I …I am seeing tons of these 4bt in 4runner and mini truck threads. The 4bt is an amazing engine. But like the others have said really too big for these little trucks and jeeps. You'll get better use out of the vw and mb swaps. The best tranny is subjective, but there are many options out there. Probably the best option for a stick transmission, with overdrive, would be a Ford setup, with one of the late model 5 speeds out of a 3/4 ton or so. The AW-4 might just handle the power of the 4bt. I have tried to beat AW-4s into submission without luck, including towing 6,000+ lb. trailers (and not gently!) and just plain being dumb. If you aren't planning to use your XJ to tow with, it should handle the 4bt.4BT Jeep Swaps. Also YouTube has a number of ranger swap vids. There is a guy on the 4bt Facebook page with a 12v in a sas ranger and on YouTube there's a guy with a 3-53 Detroit in one.Conquistador brings up another good point about the 4BT in that it is a dog. They came with 105hp for pre '98 and 170hp after '98 with 268 and 420 ft/lbs respectively. Another con to them is the weight of them. They can weigh 750-800lbs wet and a 6bt is about 1100lbs, where as an iron block V8 5.3L LS is about 500 lbs.There is another guy on here about to spend $25k on a V8 swap.
